The First Voyage’ Campaign 2024

By | 7 November, 2024 | 0 comments

At ADRIAN Hoteles, we have been participating for years in the “The First Journey” campaign, an initiative dedicated to protecting the Cory’s shearwater, a species of seabird native to our coasts that faces multiple challenges during its development stage and migratory flight. The main objective is to raise awareness among local communities, workers and visitors about the importance of these birds in our ecosystem and the actions we can take to support them on their first journey.

At this time of year shearwaters begin their flight to the ocean, where they will spend most of their lives. However, due to light pollution, many of them become disoriented and run the risk of not surviving.

From our hotels, we try to contribute as much as necessary with actions such as:

1. Informative talks to the staff

The protection of Cory’s shearwaters begins with information and knowledge. Weeks before the start of the campaign, we carried out a series of informative talks for our staff, in which we explained both the life cycle of the shearwater and the risks they face, especially during their first flight. Our staff are now trained to act quickly and appropriately if they encounter a shearwater in trouble, contacting the relevant authorities to ensure its rescue.

2. Reducing lighting in our facilities

To contribute to the reduction of light pollution, our facilities have reduced the intensity of outdoor lights at night from the 1st to the 11th of November. With this measure, we aim to minimise the disorientation of the shearwaters, helping them to orientate themselves better during their first flight to the sea. It is a small gesture that can make a big difference for these birds and our ecosystem.

3. Children’s Show: ‘Adventure with Cinderella Shearwater: Rescuing Luna’ at the Roca Nivaria GH Mini Club

As a novelty this year, we wanted to involve the little ones, designing a show in the Roca Nivaria GH mini-club so that they can also get to know this initiative. Entitled ‘Adventure with Cory’s Shearwater: Rescuing Luna’, this mini-show aims to teach and raise awareness among children of the importance of caring for and protecting the Cory’s shearwater.

The show focuses on the story of Luna, a young shearwater who, like many of her kind, is attempting her first flight. However, Luna faces a major difficulty: light pollution that disorients her and causes her to fall. Thanks to the help of some sympathetic tourists, Luna is rescued and handed over to the local shelter, where she is cared for and prepared for her journey to the ocean. Finally, with the support of all the young spectators and her caregivers, Luna sets off on her long-awaited journey and is reunited with her family.

With this story, children not only learn about the life of shearwaters, but also understand how they can help protect them in real life.

At ADRIAN Hoteles we are committed to the protection of our environment and the well-being of the species that inhabit it. The ‘The First Journey’ campaign is further proof of our responsible and caring approach.
